Historically Lenten learning communities would help prepare for the initiation rite of water baptism on the morning of Easter Sunday where people would symbolically be ‘born again’, rising from the waters of death with the risen Christ.
Today are seeking to renew these wilderness traditions and ourselves in our own journeys of discovery of what it means to follow Jesus in our culture and moment.
#40ways40days involves immersing ourselves in Luke’s story of Jesus (the gospel read across the world in churches during 2016). Luke’s story gives special emphasis to the movement of the Spirit in our lives and world; the spiritual power of money; the problems of wealth and poverty; the voice of women; the art of hospitality and connecting beyond cultural difference.
#40ways40days is also an invitation to do. We have focused Luke’s story around forty ‘discipleship dynamics’. 40 things that followers of Jesus are in Luke’s story experience, feel or are are asked to do.
#40ways40days, invites people to choose a theme from the and share something of how it connects with your life and inspires or challenges your spirituality.
It may be as simple as sharing a story, a photo, a link to some art or a poem that reflects the connection of the gospel theme with your own personal joy or struggle.
It’s a way to get to know each other, the wisdom of the biblical story and the Spirit that inspired it.
